Nikon Cameras I own/use(d)
12 Megapixel APS-C
My first Nikon DSLR. It was a complete coincidence that I ended up buying this camera. I was using smaller compact cameras and wanted to try my hand in something better. It came with a kit Nikon 18-105 lens. I still use this camera, in fact a good portion of my pictures on the PULP Platform twitter page are made with it. The shutter count is over 60'000.
I loved this camera so much that I bought a second one used for 120 as part of preparing these pages. This second D90 is in great shape.
12 Megapixel Full frame
I do not own this camera, but I have access to it at my workplace. Very robust camera. The shutter count is not even 10'000 although it is more than 10 years old. This is a typical use if the owner is not taking it around al the time, and perhaps 5% of the lifetime of such a camera.
For this project when I was looking for a used camera to buy, I had a hard time not buying another one. They can be had for as little as 250 a great value.
24 Megapixel APS-C
Actually my least favorite camera, it is still excellent, but out of all the cameras I used, this is the one I am not so fond of. I bought this at a great discount new when its successor came out. I was a bit naive. I was convinced that having 2x more pixels than my D90, this camera would be 2x better. In almost every technical aspect the D7100 is a better camera, at least on paper (you can find many www sites that will convince you). In practice, I learned that the technical details do not matter so much, and subjectively, I had a better time with my D90.
I ended up going to Chile for 3 weeks, and used the D90 and D7100 at the same time. I had 50cm x 25cm prints of pictures from the trip, and no one can tell which camera I used for which picture.
24 Megapixel Full frame
I actually only recently bought this camera used as part of preparing these pages. There were many D700s available, but I wanted something else, and I ended up buying this one for about 450. Excellent value for such a good camera.
24 Megapixel Full frame
I loved my D750. It was stolen with my bag on a train in 2019 (with an older Nikon 105 macro mounted). This was my first full-frame camera and was clearly a step above the D7100 which in theory has the same number of pixels. Of course the camera is more than the number of pixels (see also D90 vs D7100), and another step where I learned that the cameras I use are way above my level.
45 Megapixel Full frame
After my D750 was stolen I wanted to buy another full frame camera but did not want to buy the same camera twice. After about a year of going back and forth, I ended up buying this camera. This camera is too good to be true, and way too good for me. Technically it let's me get away with things I shouldn't. I love it, and I was fortunate enough to be to afford it, but to be honest it is unnecessarily good.
