Mid-range APS-C camera

24 Megapixel APS-C
Actually my least favorite camera, it is still excellent, but out of all the cameras I used, this is the one I am the least attached. I bought this at a great discount new when its successor came out. I was a bit naive. I was convinced that having 2x more pixels than my D90, this camera would be 2x better. In almost every technical aspect the D7100 is a better camera, at least on paper (you can find many www sites that will convince you). In practice, I learned that these technical details do not matter so much, and subjectively, I had a better time with my D90.

I ended up going to Chile for 3 weeks, and used the D90 and D7100 at the same time. I had 50cm x 25cm prints of pictures from the trip, and no one can tell which camera I used for which picture.

Price

The progression with this camera went, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500 over a span of 8 years. I only used the D7100, but from the specs, it can be argued that all are the same with progressive updates. Only D7500 is available for sale as new for a bit less than 1'000. The others can be gotten progressively cheaper used as low as 200 for a D7000 which is a pretty good deal and prices in between for the others. I would not buy a new camera of this family, there are simply so good options used both for the D7xxx family and others.

The Good

  • Very good resolution
  • Insignificant differences between D7000, D7100, D7200
  • Can use most lenses made by Nikon

The problems

  • Feels a bit cheap, not as robust as a Nikon D700
  • Getting a bit older, after a while electronics/batteries will start failing
