On the left, the formidable Nikon 105, which has macro, vibration reduction and a gorgeous autofocus. It also happens to be half a kilo heavier, or about 2.5 times heavier than the compact [Nikon 105. There will be cases where you ''need'' the bigger, better, and meaner Nikon 105, but for a wide range of cases, the little brother is just as good. current

One thing to get used to when trying wide angle shots is to get close. You stick your lens right into the action so that you have something to fill the frame. Otherwise everything disappears in the distance and you have large bands of empty space top and bottom. current

It helps that there are no people around, and the curved roof as well as the rounded thrash bins, curved lake-front all help keep this picture a bit more ''believable''. current

I am actually much closer to the statue than you think. I need to hold the camera straight not to get too much distortion, and there is nobody in the shot where the wide angle looks unnatural. Keep it close, keep it centered and look for roundish features. current

For everyone who thinks you need wide angle for landscape shots, this is a good example. This shot will end up looking much better if we crop the middle third. There is already too much space pushing the village further away. If I were to use the widest angle, there would be almost nothing of interest visible in the shot. current
