As of 2021, this is the latest APS-C camera that Nikon has on the market, and considering that the trend is clearly mirrorless it will probably be one of the last APS-C DSLR cameras that they make. Compared to Nikon D7100 it has less pixels, so on paper it is 15% worse. It is not. Just about every imaginable quality of the camera is technically better, but to be honest, it does not make that much of a difference. Even the Nikon D90 is a great camera, more than I need.

The camera is still new, so I need a bit more experience to write something else. So far, gorgeous, and definitely more than I ever needed.

As it is still the latest model, used versions sell for 800-1000 and are not that often available. For that price a new one is probably a better buy at less than 1500. It is a lot of money for an APS-C camera, and if I look at the new prices (2021), a slightly older Nikon D750 at 1100 is a better deal than any (used or new) D500, considering that it is also a full frame camera. This is because the D500 is still the latest model, while there is a newer D780, which for all practical purposes is identical to the D750. I predict, like the Nikon D90 and Nikon D700, you will end up finding these cameras in 10-15 years time, and it will be very good value second hand.

Latest and meanest APS-C camera

20 Megapixel APS-C
As of 2021, this is the latest APS-C camera that Nikon has on the market, and considering that the trend is clearly mirrorless it will probably be one of the last APS-C DSLR cameras that they make. Compared to my older Nikon D7100 it has less pixels, so on paper it is 15% worse. It is not. Just about every imaginable quality of the camera is technically better, but to be honest, it does not make that much of a difference. Even the Nikon D90 is a great camera, more than I need.

Price

The Good

 • Very good build
 • Excellent performance
 • Can use most lenses made by Nikon

The problems

 • No flash
 • Quite expensive both new and used
 • Almost as bulky as a full frame camera, it is in fact, slightly larger and heavier than a Nikon D750

I write from my own experience. I ended up using mainly Nikon, so I am more familiar with this brand than others. See price for notes on pricing as well as photography related links.
