Here is a compromise lens for your camera

Kit lenses are cheaper zooms that manufacturers bundle with their cameras so that first time customers have something they can play with. They are usually optimized to reduce cost, and provide general usability. However you have to understand, the companies can not really offer a universal zoom as a kit lens, as this would mean that people would not buy further lenses. So technically these lenses are made so that they are really interesting but they leave a good taste for the users to explore more.

For me the best kit lens would have been a prime lens like the Nikon 35 or at the other extreme a universal zoom like the Nikon 28-300. The first would frustrate many that customers that may not be so much in to the technical aspects of photography, and the other would probably eliminate any further sales of lenses.

Do not get me wrong, most kit lenses I saw are great and would work for a large variety of uses. But when you know that you want more, they are probably not the best combination to start with. Not because they are bad, just the opposite, because they are really good for 90% of the cases, it is harder to justify or invest for 10% of the cases they are not suited for.

I write from my own experience. I ended up using mainly Nikon, so I am more familiar with this brand than others. See price for notes on pricing as well as photography related links.
