A full frame mirrorless camera with great value

26 Megapixel Full Frame
If you browse this page you will notice that I use mainly Nikon equipment. But other manufacturers also make great great cameras and lenses, and the Canon EOS RP is truly a great mirrorless camera. It makes great pictures, is very light and comes with a very reasonable price when bought new (see more below). The negative points about the camera are mainly due to its compact size, some of the buttons are a bit difficult to reach for me (or needs getting used to). Their organization of the control elements makes sense and ergonomically it is clearly better than say Nikon Z FC, but still the smaller size makes things a bit tighter. The build is actually quite solid (well for the price range), but it looks cheaper than its actual build, don't let that fool you.

This is not my camera, I borrowed it from a friend to test it over a weekend. I love my own cameras, but if this was the only camera I had, I would be very happy.

Price

This camera is a great example of what is wrong with the world of cameras today. If you are interested take a look at this comparison by Ken Rockwell of Canon mirrorless models released around 2020. It is by far the cheapest of the line-up, and the performance difference between the cameras does not come anywhere close to the difference in price. Of course 45 or 30 Megapixels is more than 26, and 20/12/8 frames per second is faster than 5 frames per second, but for me the key metric is the weight (this camera weighs less than 500 grams) and then the price (with 1000 almost half the price of the next best camera) and in both cases this camera rules.

The main problem is the battery. So far, I have never had a fully charged camera run out of battery halfway through the day (<200 shots). It has a smaller battery, and the mirrorless functionality seems to ask more from it. There is also a chance that I could have activated some additional power saving features, but on an interesting day, without video, this camera would need about three batteries. For a comparison, I can use some of the older Nikon DSLRs for more than 1000 shots.

The Good

  • Excellent value for money
  • Very light
  • Excellent performance

The problems

  • The battery does not last a day if you are using it extensively.
  • No built in flash
  • Controls a bit difficult to reach due to compact size
  • Personally I would have preferred an APS-C model as the lenses would be lighter. Canon just does not make them.

These pages are for Amateur Photographers and not really for seasoned photographers and professionals. I have no affiliation or commercial interest with any brand/make. I write from my own experience. I ended up using mainly Nikon, so I am more familiar with this brand than others. See price for notes on pricing as well as photography related links.
